Competent media practitioners need training and re-training to excel in their jobs. In this article, we will look at some aspects of media training and how these training programs can help you.

    Undergraduate Training

If you want to work in the media and communications industry, the sensible route to success is an undergraduate program in a reputable university. After you graduate from high school, you should apply to the Mass Communication department of a reputable college. A degree in program in Mass Communication takes four years. During this period, you will study communication arts, journalism as well as radio and television production.

You will also take courses in English, creative writing, broadcasting and editing. In addition to these courses, you will be taught some aspects of the law as it affects people in the communication industry. This way, you know all about libel, slander and sedition. In some cases, you might be required to take courses in public relations and advertising.

As you can see, a degree program in mass communication covers a lot of ground but nobody expects you to be a jack-of-all-trades and a master of all. You study most of the courses above in your first year and in your sophomore year. However, in your senior at the university, you can special on a particular branch of the media industry and aim to become a specialist when you graduate.

    Post-Graduate Training

Now, you have your degree in Mass Communication so you are an expert in the media industry but you are not yet a specialist. You can get a job and rise through the ranks if you like. You can also go for a post-graduate degree because this will give you greater career prospects. You can specialize in public communication, online journalism, broadcasting or television production.

    Courses and Seminars

In the media world, paper qualifications might help you get a job but you need technical skills to keep your job and grow in the industry. For this reason, you should attend seminars and workshops in your field. You should also learn new things and get familiar with current trends in the industry. For instance, if you were trained in the analog radio and TV production, you cannot fit into the current era of digital technology. Your best move is to update your skills immediately. The right training in digital production will ensure you always have jobs in the digital media industry.

    On the Job Training

Apart from formal academic courses in the media industry, you can get better at the job if you just keep your eyes open and learn. On the job training is a great way to grow in the media world. Learn from senior professionals in your workplace and get a mentor to help you.

Finally, you should attend in-house training programs in your workplace or get a coach to help you grow. This way, you can get all the media training you need.
