What To Do When a Loved One Is Arrested

More than 60 years ago, the Crickets recorded “I Fought the Law.” It took nearly a decade for the song to become popular, and since then it’s been covered by artists as diverse as The Clash, Bruce Springsteen, Roy Orbison and Hank Williams, Jr. Regardless of whose version they heard, most Americans are all too familiar with the song, or at least its meaning. Arrest numbers are on the rise, to the point where 50% of the adult population has an immediate family member who has seen jail time. If you have a loved one who is among the nearly 11 million arrests made each year, here are some tips to help you navigate the situation.

    Post Bail

The fastest way to get your loved one out of lock-up is by posting bail. Oftentimes bail amounts can be difficult for the average American to cover, in which case you may require the services of a Pennsylvania bail bond company or one in your area. Your bondsman will cover the cost of bail and help in completing the paperwork required for release.

    Hire an Attorney

Your loved one will require legal representation, so finding an experienced criminal defense attorney is a crucial task. You’ll be entrusting him or her to see to your family member’s freedom, so take the time to find the right match. Look for an attorney who specializes in your loved one’s alleged crime, answers all your questions and clearly communicates their fees. Be sure to ask for referrals and check online review sites before committing to an attorney.

    Respect the Process

A family member’s arrest is a stressful time, but excessive worrying, arguing with attorneys or obstructing investigations will only worsen the situation. Instead, keep a positive attitude and be a source of inspiration for your incarcerated loved one.

When someone you know is facing legal trouble, they’ll need your support to get through the predicament. These tips will help you facilitate their freedom.
