As we all know, water is crucial to all forms of life. But what people often forget is that even the hardiest desert plants need to have water in order to live. A lot of people don’t understand how water affects plant growth and just how important watering your plants regularly is.

How Does Water Help a Plant?

Watering your plants will help the plant itself to get all the nutrients through the plant. That is because plants get their nutrients from the soil so when you water it, they can absorb them better. When they don’t have water in their cells a plant will get droopy, once you give it enough water it will stand upright. Water will carry all the dissolved sugar along with other nutrients to your plant. When it doesn’t have enough water the plant that you have will become malnourished and it will look unhealthy as it is as well as be very flimsy and droopy. Keep in mind that different plants require different amounts of water. But when it comes to outdoor plants it is really hard to control the amount of water your plants are getting. Your job is to keep track of how much water they are getting, add more if they are too dry as well as ensure that they have proper drainage. Too much water is as bad as not having enough water. The same goes for taking care of indoor plants.

Entry of Water in a Plant

Another thing that not a lot of people know is just how water travels up the plant. Your plant will get water through its root system. After that, the water will travel up the plant through its stems and leaves and then into flowers or fruits, if it has one. The water will trap up the plant through its vessels which will spread water through the different parts of the plant.

What Does Water Do For A Plant In Other Ways?

Water will help the plant keep the proper temperature as all the water evaporates. When all the water or moisture evaporates from the surface, the plant will need to have more water which will get drawn through the roots in order to replace all the water that it has lost.

    Basic Watering Techniques

As we have mentioned above, how you water your plants will mainly depend on the type of the plant as well as where you live. Some people will opt for installing a sprinkling system while others will go for having the best quality garden hose. Both of them are great options, it mainly depends on your preferences and needs.

    How Much Is Enough?

Probably one of the most important things that you need to know when you are watering your plants is how much each plant needs. It is something that you need to learn how to do simply by looking and touching the dirt around your plants. If you put your finger in the dirt about a half of an inch and it is dry it needs to be watered. Another thing that you need to pay attention to is the temperature. If it is warm, you will need to water your plants about once a week while if it’s super-hot such as over 90 you will need to make sure to water them every few days. But as we have mentioned before, you have to be careful that you don’t overwater them. Even though it takes a lot of time, going around the garden and looking and touching to see if your plants need water or not, it is the best way to have your plants thrive.

The best time to water your plants is in the morning. That is because it will give the water enough time to seep into the soil before the sun hits it. The worst time that you can water your plants is in the savings because it will leave the foliage damp overnight and it will create the perfect conditions for mould and fungus to thrive in. But keep in mind that it is better to water your plants at a random tie of the day than leave them bone dry.

By keeping an eye on your garden’s moisture, you will help your plants thrive and it will save you trouble and expenses.
